Around 120 people were arrested till Monday evening across Calcutta for “disorderly conduct”, police said.

Most of the arrests were made in East Jadavpur, Panchasayar, Survey Park, Anandapur and the Calcutta Leather Complex.

Drinking in public places led to the seizure of more than 10 litres of liquor from different parts of north Calcutta.

“Complaints about forcible splashing of colours kept pouring in from Gariahat, Lake, Karaya, Rabindra Sarovar and Tiljala since the morning,” said a senior officer at Lalbazar.

“Police teams were sent to the areas with specific addresses and offenders were arrested.”

At a few places, groups of youths were cautioned by officers.

At other places, men in uniform checked with representatives of apartment associations to find out whether rules were being violated.

Sources said this year the thrust was on two key areas — bikers moving around in groups and people splashing colours from the rooftops.

Police commissioner Anuj Sharma had reportedly asked senior officers to be vigilant about drink driving, especially by bikers.

Sharma, sources said, had also asked all divisions of Calcutta police to ensure separate teams were on rounds, apart from the ones by respective police stations, to ensure there was no brawl over forcible splashing of colours.

From early Monday, police teams from respective divisions — there are nine divisions across Calcutta — took their position at major intersections, following up on the drive that begun on Sunday.

At the Ultadanga Hudco crossing, Maniktala, Phoolbagan, Ruby hospital crossing, Tollygunge, Behala Chowrasta, Gariahat and Shyamabazar, police officers remained positioned in their vehicles, keeping tabs on revellers.

Complaints reaching the control room at Lalbazar were immediately forwarded to respective police stations with a message to the divisional control room, from where officers followed up on the action taken against the alleged offenders.

By afternoon, as streets looked deserted, officers on two-wheelers kept visiting lanes and bylanes of different parts of Calcutta with constables in tow to keep an eye on Holi revellers.
