Calcutta High Court on Friday heard a petition on five cases of alleged rape that had happened in various parts of the state in recent days and asked police to continue with the probes.

However, a division bench headed by Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava said two of the cases would be probed by the police under the supervision of court-appointed IPS officers.

The incidents of alleged rapes were reported from Maynaguri in Jalpaiguri, Namkhana and Netra in South 24-Parganas, Pingla in West Midnapore and Santiniketan in Birbhum.

In response to an earlier order of the bench, the investigators placed the respective case dairies before the court.

Advocate Sushmita Saha Dutta had moved the court demanding probes by either the CBI or a committee headed by a retired high court judge.

The division bench had already ordered that rapes at Namkhana be monitored by special police commissioner of Calcutta Damayanti Sen.

In response to repeated request by Saha Dutta , the division bench directed IPS officer and deputy inspector-general of police (personnel) Parul Jain to monitor the investigation into the Pingla incident, where a poor girl was allegedly abducted from her home while she was washing utensils and gang-raped.

Submitting the case dairy of the Pingla incident, advocate general S.N. Mukherjee, however, claimed that the local police had conducted the probe in a fair manner and arrested the accused.

Mukherjee also said medical test of the victims had been conducted and the statement of recorded.

After going through the case dairies relating to the rapes at Maynaguri, Santiniketan and Netra, the court decided that the local police would continue with their investigations.
