An intense bout of monsoon rain from Wednesday evening to Thursday afternoon floods many areas in Malda.
Sources in the Met office said that in the past 24 hours, that is, till 8.30am on Thursday, it rained 117.80mm in the district.
At the district headquarters, many areas of Englishbazar municipality got waterlogged for the second time in the past 10 days.
The downpour also led to a rise in water levels in all the major rivers which flow through the district.
The Ganga on Thursday was flowing at 23.55 metres, around 1.14 metres below the danger level. The Mahananda was flowing at 21.08 metres, which is almost a metre above the danger level, said sources in the state irrigation department.
The Mora Mahananda, a tributary of the Mahananda, also swelled and flooded a bridge at Pirganj in Ratua-II block. Residents of Maharajpur, where the bridge is located, had to wade across the flooded bridge to go to the block hospital and schools on Thursday.
The rainfall also damaged vegetables across over 100 acres of land at Nurpur panchayat of Manikchak block.
Amid the rain, a hutment collapsed in Milik Sultanpur of Kaliachak-I block.
However, no casualty has been reported so far.
