Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari on Friday produced before Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee purported evidence in support of his claim that MLA Mukul Roy had defected from the BJP to the Trinamul Congress.
Adhikari’s lawyers led by Bilwadal Bhattacharya submitted social media posts and news reports to buttress the charge of Roy’s defection to the Speaker who held a hearing on the Opposition leader’s plea to disqualify the MLA.
Banerjee had earlier held that Roy was still a BJP MLA, but Calcutta High Court asked the Speaker to reconsider his verdict.
Advocate Sayantak Das who appeared for Roy reiterated that he was still with the BJP. “They (Suvendu’s counsel) have brought forth some new points. We will be fighting them legally. But there is nothing new for us to say. Mukul Roy is still with the BJP,” Das said.
He confirmed that Adhikari’s lawyers had submitted some visual evidence. “Yes, he (Roy) had once gone there (Trinamul office) out of courtesy,” Das said, arguing that visiting the Trinamul office didn’t mean Roy had joined the party.
The matter will be heard again on April 28.
BJP faction feud
BJP national secretary Anupam Hazra on Friday took to social media to share a cryptic post. Although Hazra didn’t name anyone, sources close to him said he was targeting the current state BJP leadership.
“Quit self-pride. Try self-analysis. Old timers are slowly going away, getting lost. Let us work together, with no shame whether we win or lose,” Hazra tweeted with the hashtag “To whom it may concern”.
