Police have arrested two private security guards for allegedly molesting a young woman at the Malda Medical College & Hospital (MMCH) on Friday night and also trying to rape her and shoot a video of the incident.

The incident has prompted the MMCH authorities to install additional CCTV cameras to intensify digital surveillance across the campus and also set up a footage monitoring room where round-the-clock vigil would be kept to ensure better security within the premises.

The victim had alleged that four private security guards posted at the hospital intercepted her when she moved out of a ward to get certain items for one of her relatives who is under treatment at the hospital. The quartet then dragged her to a deserted area and molested her. They then planned to rape her and also shoot a video. The woman somehow escaped from their clutch.

Later at night, she filed a complaint at Englishbazar police station. The police have arrested one of the four accused on Saturday.

“We have arrested two others from different locations on Sunday. They will be taken into custody for further interrogation,” said Pradeep Kumar Yadav, SP, Malda.

Meanwhile, in MMCH, the authorities have decided to install more CCTV cameras to intensify digital surveillance across the campus.

Puranjay Saha, the vice-principal of MMCH, said they have written to the state health department, seeking more CCTV cameras for the campus.

“We have consulted experts and they have suggested that at least 50 more cameras are necessary to cover the entire area. As of now, there are 144 CCTV cameras in the campus. We have also decided to start round-the-clock monitoring of the videos transmitted by the cameras. A separate room with monitors would be set up and employees be deputed in shifts to keep vigil across the campus. In case they notice any unwanted activity, they will pass the information to us,” said Saha.
