A group of goons entered the rented home of Prakash Chik Baraik, the Rajya Sabha member of Trinamul and the party’s district president in Alipurduar, here on Wednesday night, assaulted two persons and ransacked the place.
Prakash, who was present with some other party workers, could nab three of them who were handed over to the police. The police arrested three others in connection with the incident.
A probe is on to find out the motive behind the attack.
The MP hails from Newlands tea estate, which is in Kumargram block of Alipurduar district. Being an MP as well as the district Trinamul chief, Prakash has taken a flat on rent in Madhyapara, a locality in ward 4 of Alipurduar town where this incident took place.
Around 11.30pm, while Prakash was having a meeting with some Trinamul workers regarding a Bijoya Sanmilani, a group of six youths reached the apartment in an SUV.
While three stayed outside, three others entered the premises.
Sources said they caught hold of the private security guard of the apartment and roughed him up. They then grabbed the guard by his collar and forced him to guide them to Prakash’s flat.
As they reached the flat’s door, the trio started kicking and banging on the door, while continuously pressing the bell.
Swapan Sarkar, a Trinamul worker who was with Prakash, opened the door. The trio pounced on him and started beating him.
“We were taken aback by such a sudden attack. As they started ransacking the furniture, I along with some others, tried to intervene. Some other residents of the apartment rushed in and we overpowered the trio. I immediately called up the police and a team reached my place in 10 minutes,” said the Trinamul MP.
The police also arrested three others who were outside. Some sharp weapons were found in their vehicle, said sources.
“I have no inkling as to why they attacked my accommodation. I suspect a conspiracy of the BJP,” said Prakash.
BJP leaders, however, denied the charge. “The Trinamul MP is unnecessarily dragging the BJP into the incident. We have no connection with the attack. We believe the police will find out the truth,” said Manoj Tigga, the district BJP president and party’s chief whip in the Assembly.
Y. Raghuvamshi, the district police chief, said the MP filed a complaint and investigations were on.
On Thursday, all six were produced at a local court, which sent one in police custody for four days and five in judicial custody for 14 days.
