A 31-year-old health worker in Alipurduar town filed a complaint with Malda’s Englishbazar police on Wednesday, accusing a person who promised to marry her of conning her of over Rs 6 lakh.
The person, she said, had introduced himself as “college professor Suman Majumdar of Malda town”. Sources said three years ago, this woman’s family inserted her matrimonial advertisement in a newspaper to which Majumdar responded. Once their marriage was fixed, he took Rs 6.6 lakh from the family in instalments for “furniture and wedding expenses” and deferred the marriage date a number of times, the last being February 2. Currently, he is traceless.
Arrests
Acting on a tip-off, Malda’s Englishbazar police arrested five goons from Jahaj Field area of the town on Tuesday night and seized a pipe gun, one round of live cartridge and some sharp and blunt instruments from them.
“We suspect that they had assembled in the area to commit a crime. Among those who have been arrested, one is from Burdwan while four others are from different areas of Malda,” said a police source.
