The National Green Tribunal on Monday directed Bengal’s chief secretary to ensure there are no violations in Rabindra Sarobar during Chhath Puja on November 2.

The tribunal disposed of the case after making it clear that from now on only the committee chaired by the chief secretary would monitor the Sarobar situation.

The bench of Justice S.P. Wangdi and expert member S.S. Garbyal gave the ruling in response to petitions filed by environment activist Subhas Datta and a few others on the matter.

“We have told the tribunal about the steps taken by the government and the Calcutta Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) to ensure compliance of its order barring Chhath puja in Rabindra Sarobar,” Poushali Banerjee, the CMDA lawyer, said.

Metro had reported on Sunday that the Sarobar would remain closed from November 2 afternoon till next morning to ensure Chhath Puja devotees did not perform their rituals in the water.

Last year, the tribunal had banned Chhath rituals at Rabindra Sarobar.

The CMDA has readied alternative sites at Nonadanga, Baishnabghata and Nature Park near Taratala for devotees to perform their rituals.
