Bengal governor Keshari Nath Tripathi has appealed to all concerned to ensure that violence does not recur and peace prevails in the state.
“Governor Tripathi is very sad at the unfortunate loss of lives and properties of the citizens. He extends his heartfelt sympathy for the families and near and dear ones of the deceased,” the Raj Bhavan said in a statement on Sunday.
Sources said the governor had sent a report to New Delhi. Tripathi left for Delhi on Saturday morning for a pre-scheduled meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. The governor told the PTI news agency that he had sought an appointment of the Prime Minister to congratulate him on his re-election and “I have come here for that”.
But a source said: “A meeting has been fixed between the governor and the home minister on Sunday evening. This meeting can be a fallout of the Sandeshkhali violence,” said a source.
On reports that he would submit a report on the violence during his meeting with Modi, the governor told PTI: “There is no such thing scheduled. I did not have time earlier (to go to Delhi to congratulate Modi) and had sought time for a meeting with the PM. I have been given time tomorrow (Monday).”
