The Government Railway Police (GRP) of Siliguri has passed an alert to the railways, stating a possibility of a “speculated terror attack” on railway infrastructure in north Bengal.

The GRP, sources said, recently sent letters to the divisional managers of Katihar and Alipurduar divisions of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).

In north Bengal, from Malda to Cooch Behar, the railway network comes under these three railway divisions. The third is the Malda division which is under the Eastern Railway.

In its written alert to the railways, the GRP stressed every preventive measure, including more vigil at stations and tracks, using sniffer dogs to check trains, putting up searchlights in bridges and culverts and anti-sabotage equipment.

“The GRP has also underscored the need for joint patrolling with the Railway Protection Force (RPF),” said a source.

The railway authorities have acted on the letter.

“Based on the GRP’s alert in Kaihar and Alipurduar divisions, vigilance has been intensified at the stations and security tightened in some other important locations. We are taking all required steps to combat any situation. People should not worry,” said K.K. Sharma, NFR chief public relations officer.
