When Mohammad Nasim lost his six-year-old daughter to cancer in 2011, he decided to do something to keep her memory alive.

Nasim, a hawker at Grand Arcade in Esplanade, has been organising a blood donation camp every year since 2013, in memory of Taskeen Warsi, who was a Class I student at Loreto Day School, Sealdah, when she passed away.

“It had spread to her liver and kidney. She died in a few months,” father Nasim said.

The camp is held on a stretch of the road near the Collin Street-Market Street crossing. This year’s camp was held on Sunday and 100 people donated blood. “If the blood collected from so many people helps save a few lives, it will make me happy,” Naseem said.

Arvind Kumar Shaw, owner of a shop on Market Street, was one of the donors at Sunday’s camp. “I knew the girl. So, when Nasim started organising the blood donation camp, I decided to take part. I have donated blood every year,” Shaw said.

The donated blood was collected by a blood bank, which issued 100 cards in return. “The cards have a one- year validity. The bank gives a card for each donor. I keep the cards with me and whenever I hear that someone is in need of blood, I hand over the card to the person or the family,” Nasim said.
