A godown of plastic goods at the Anandapur’s West Chowbhaga area caught fire on Sunday evening prompting one of the people inside to rush to the terrace and jump off the second floor of the building to survive the flames.

The man has been admitted to the intensive care unit of a private hospital with critical injuries, police said.

The incident happened a few hundred metres off EM Bypass at the ground floor of a two-storey building around 5.15pm on Sunday.

Police identified the man who jumped off the second floor of the building as Gopal.

The sight of a man jumping off the building that is being engulfed in flames brought back memories of Stephen Court where in 2010, several people who were trapped inside, had tried to jump on Park Street, but could not survive the fall.

Police said eight fire tenders were pressed into action to douse the fire inside the plastic godown.

As the fire was spotted and thick black smoke started billowing out of the building, people at West Chowbhaga spotted a man on the terrace of the building, who was covered in smoke and standing close to the parapet.

A video footage has emerged on the social media that showed the man trapped on the terrace of the building trying to scale down the wall but his grip on the parapet wall loosened and he crashed on the ground.

The residents of the area rushed the man to a hospital close to the godown and got him admitted while fire brigade personnel started dousing the fire with water jets.

The fire came under control several hours later in the evening.

The police said a forensic team would visit the spot once the cooling procedure was
complete.

The city has witnessed several fire incidents in the recent past including one at a non-operational bar-cum-restaurant on Camac Street and at a bookstore inside Acropolis Mall.
