A two-year-old girl who was abducted from Mumbai around four months ago has been rescued from a locality near New Jalpaiguri station.

Sources said Asif Ali Sheikh, who stays at Madani Bazaar near Siliguri, had allegedly kidnapped the girl from Bandra railway station on September 19.

He had brought the girl to his rented accommodation here and had plans to engage her in begging, said the sources.

After the abduction, the girl’s family members filed a complaint at Bandra police station. The police scanned the CCTV footage at the railway station and came to know that the girl had been taken to Siliguri by Sheikh, who abducts minors and engages them in begging.

“There are reports that he even sells the children for hefty sums,” said a source.

The Bandra police in the meanwhile took up the matter with their counterparts at New Jalpaiguri.

A few days ago, a team of Bandra police reached here and started a joint probe with the NJP police. They eventually zeroed in on Sheikh’s accommodation.

“The accused person had gone to Alipurduar, keeping the girl with his family. He was nabbed and the girl was also rescued,” the source said.

The police team from Maharashtra carried out legal formalities and returned with the girl. She will be handed over to her family soon.

The police here are questioning Sheikh, said sources.
