The Government Railway Police in East Burdwan's Kalna recovered the body of a Class XII girl beside the railway tracks on Friday night within two hours of her reportedly calling up her mother to say that some people "would not let me live".
"My daughter went to her English private tuition last evening. She called and told me ora amake banchte debe na (they would not let me live). Then she disconnected the line. I desperately called her back, but the calls were not answered," said the mother of the 17-year-old girl.
Some of her family members told this correspondent that they had come to know that her class ended half an hour before the usual time. The CCTV footage collected by the police showed she was crossing a railway level crossing around 6.37pm on Friday.
"Her body was recovered close to the same level crossing," said a family source.
The source added that some family members, including the mother, suspect murder. "The GRP told us that it looks like suicide but we believe she was murdered," he said, but did not elaborate.
A senior GRP official stated that the preliminary probe did not indicate foul play. "We have not received any complaint of murder from the girl's family so far. We will thoroughly probe the case, but it is too early to label it murder," said a GRP officer.
Residents said the girl was a good student who topped Madhyamik in the area.
The mother added that the girl was taking coaching to prepare for NEET in the hope of becoming a doctor after her father died in a road accident two years ago.
"I want the police to find out who are those who did not let her live," she told reporters.
Local MLA and state minister Swapan Debnath visited the family and promised a police probe.
The death prompted the BJP to raise the issue of women’s safety in Bengal.
"A girl died in Kalna after telling her mother that some people would not let her live. Consider this before casting your vote,” said BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, in Taldangra ahead of the bypoll.
