Mayor Gautam Deb expressed disgruntlement over the healthcare services provided at the urban primary health centre (UPHC) which is being run by the civic body in ward five of the city where the highest number of dengue cases has been reported so far.
Deb, who went to the ward on Thursday to check out whether adequate preventive measures are being taken to check further spreading of the vector borne disease, also instructed the officials to install CCTV cameras in all the 10 UPHCs so that the centres come under direct surveillance of Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC).
On Thursday, while Deb was visiting areas like Natunpara, Ramghat Road and Ganganagar — all in ward 5, some residents informed him that regular healthcare services are not available at the UPHC and also the conservancy services are poor in their localities.
“There are 10 UPHC in 47 wards of SMC. The residents alleged that doctors and paramedics irregularly visit the centre and they do not get the services. This left the mayor irate as ward five is one of the most affected areas where 350 dengue cases have been reported so far,” said a source.
Following the outbreak of dengue in Siliguri, the health department expressed dissatisfaction over the cleanliness in the wards.
The mayor asked the chairperson of borough-I to visit the health centre twice a week and also keep a tab on the localities where dengue cases have been reported.
He then asked the civic officials to install the CCTV cameras in all UPHCs of the city.
Later, talking to newspersons, the mayor said: “We have been monitoring this ward. Situation is improving here but we have to continuously work to combat the disease.”
