Fresh tension gripped some parts of Bhangar in South 24-Parganas on Saturday following clashes erupting between warring Trinamul and ISF supporters over campaigning for the panchayat elections.

A number of bombs were hurled during the clash in Bhagawanpur under Kashipur police station, prompting the ISF supporters to put a road blockade.

Trouble broke out in the morning over an ISF wall graffiti in Bhagwanpur that the party alleged was defaced by Trinamul. ISF supporters further claimed that when they tried to resist it, Trinamul activists hurled bombs at them. This triggered a clash between the two sides.

As news spread, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. A large police force was deployed after the incident as a precautionary measure, sources said.

“With the support of local criminals, Trinamul supporters defaced our wall graffiti. We tried to resist them, but the goons hurled bombs targeting our party workers,” an ISF activist said, adding that the ruling party was trying to unleash tension again as the panchayat polls was coming closer.

Condemning the alleged attack, ISF supporters put up a blockade on the road in front of Bhagwanpur gram panchayat. The blockade was withdrawn after an hour of the police assuring them of taking action against the culprits.

A similar clash was also reported from Chariswar village of Bewta-I gram panchayat under Leather Complex police station on Saturday morning. Four persons were injured.

Police arrested two ISF supporters, Rayan Ali Moll and Jahangir Mollah, and recovered two improvised firearms and 10 rounds of live ammunition from them.

On the day’s events, ISF MLA Nawsad Siddique said: “I have appealed to all to show patience and tolerance for the sake of peace. I have also urged my party supporters not to be provoked by activities of the ruling party.”

A local Trinamul leader, on the other hand, blamed the ISF for the clashes. “Aware they will lose the polls, they are indulging in violence,” he said.

Several areas of Bhangar turned into a battlefield on June 15, the last day to file nominations for the panchayat polls, when erring rivals Trinamul and ISF supporters fought a pitched battle in which two lives were lost. One was a Trinamul supporter and the other was from the ISF.
