Renu Khatun, whose right palm had been chopped off allegedly by her husband to prevent her from joining a government job, started her journey as a government nurse in Burdwan on Tuesday.
Renu was visibly overwhelmed and happy after she joined her job in the office of East Burdwan’s chief medical officer of health.
The young nurse was in a state of uncertainty after she lost the right palm. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee intervened and assured Renu that she would get a job that suited her.
Renu had recently received the appointment letter and on Tuesday, joined duty in the CMOH’s office.
“I can’t express my joy after joining the job today. I signed the register with my left hand and will report for duty from tomorrow (Wednesday). I felt excited and forgot my pain when I stepped into the office,” said the 23-year-old.
Pranab Roy, the CMOH of East Burdwan, said: “Renu Khatun joined my office today. We will also take care of her further treatment. Health department is always with her. We will assign her a job that will be comfortable for her.”
