A milk van that was being driven on the wrong side of the Major Arterial Road (MAR) of New Town overturned on its side and crashed into the median divider near the Kolkata Gate on Monday, police said.
The driver, helper and two others in the van suffered injuries.
An officer of the Bidhannagar Commissionerate’s traffic wing said the van was headed towards the airport, but the driver was driving it down the Salt Lake-bound flank of the Major Arterial Road at high speed when he lost control of the vehicle and it veered left before crashing into the median divider.
According to the officer, the driver lost control after he spotted traffic towards Salt Lake from the airport end, headed towards the vehicle.
“The milk van driver was driving the vehicle on the wrong side of the Salt Lake-bound flank of the MAR. There is a signal at the Westin Hotel intersection that was red and cars and bikes headed to Salt Lake and Sector V had stopped there. The van had driven till the midway point between the Kolkata Gate and the Westin Hotel when the driver spotted oncoming traffic, panicked and hit the median divider before the vehicle overturned on its side,” the officer said.
Local people as well as drivers of other vehicles managed to bring out the driver, his helper and two others who were trapped in the cabin of the van. They were taken to a nearby government health centre for treatment.
