The Border Security Force on Tuesday apprehended four Indians allegedly with contraband items that they were supposed to smuggle into Bangladesh.
While three were intercepted in South Dinajpur, the fourth was caught in Cooch Behar.
Sources said the BSF’s 61 battalion posted at Hili border outpost in South Dinajpur, had caught Sahajaan Sah, a resident of Purba Aptiar village, and seized 1,640 pieces of narcotic analgesic tablets from him.
Rabiul Islam, who is from Mahakhor village of the district, was nabbed by the 174 battalion of the BSF posted at Hariharpur outpost. He had allegedly kept 100 bottles of cough syrup at his home.
The third person to be caught in Cooch Behar was Ataur Mondal of Dorahar village. The 26 battalion of the BSF posted at Devipur outpost seized 99 bottles of cough syrup while Mondal was trying to smuggle those into the neighbouring country.
In Cooch Behar, the 180 battalion apprehended Rahidul Sheikh, a truck driver hailing from Nadia district, at the Changrabandha land port. He had concealed 360 packages of pain balm which were loaded into the truck, along with boulders. He was supposed to ferry the consignment to Bangladesh.
All the four have been handed over to local police stations, along with the seized items.
Narcotics haul
Siliguri Metropolitan Police seized brown sugar (a derivative of heroin) worth over Rs one crore on Monday and arrested two persons from an SUV. Rajen Chhetri, the assistant commissioner of police (detective department), said the police had acted on a tipoff and intercepted an SUV at Baneswar More in New Jalpaiguri.
