Sikkim chief minister P. S. Tamang (Golay) on Sunday laid the foundation stones of the Sikkim Ekana Cancer Institute and Capital University at Karfectar and Zoom, both in south Sikkim, in a bid to give a boost to the health and education sectors in the state.

Both the facilities are coming up in the public-private partnership (PPP) mode with the cancer institute being set up at a cost of Rs 2,000 crore in partnership with the Uttar Pradesh-based GCGroup of Companies and theRs 200 crore varsity with the Jharkhand-based Capital University.

An official release said the state-of-the-art cancer institute had been conceived and developed by the state government and would be equipped with an advanced healthcare system. “A total of 50 acres have been allocated by the state government to set up the institute. The 500-bed institute will include a medical and nursing college along with other paramedical and wellness centres,” the release said.

In addition, the institute would also facilitate other health facilities through various super-specialty divisions.

The Capital University, on the other hand, will come up in an area of 13 acres where interdisciplinary courses will be taught to the students.

Kafectar falls under Golay’s Assembly constituency of Poklok-Kamrang in Namchi district and the Capital University under his son Aditya’s Soreng-Chakung constituency in the newly-created Soreng district.
