A former Calcutta High Court judge "returned" to the court on Monday but this time as a litigant.
Abhijit Gangopadhyay, a judge of Calcutta High Court till he resigned on March 5 to contest as a BJP candidate from Tamluk, filed a plea on Monday seeking an FIR lodged against him with Tamluk police be quashed.
The former judge has been accused of being involved in a scuffle between BJP workers and employees of schools fearing job losses in Tamluk on May 4.
Gangopadhyay was part of a rally to submit his poll nomination. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was also part of the rally. Protesting school teachers and staff shouted at Gangopadhyay and Adhikari, holding them responsible for their job loss, resulting in a scuffle. BJP workers in the rally allegedly threw stones and shoes at agitators. Two badly injured agitators had to be shifted to Calcutta Medical College for treatment.
Following this, two separate FIRs were lodged against Gangopadhyay, Adhikari and other BJP workers. The FIRs accused them of creating trouble to seek votes.
Gangopadhyay's lawyer prayed that the FIRs be quashed. Justice Jay Sengupta of Calcutta High Court is likely to hear Gangopadhyay's plea on Tuesday.
