A woman was severely injured and her 11-year-old son received minor injuries when her former employee allegedly stabbed them with a kitchen knife in her restaurant-cum-bar at Singtam, about 28km from Gangtok in Sikkim on Tuesday night.

Police said Pratima Roy was stabbed multiple times by her former cook Chandra Bahadur Gurung of Gyalshing in western Sikkim, following an altercation, and her son Santanu with the same knife.

The accused Gurung originally hails from Assam, but has been living in Sikkim for over a decade.

Both Roy and her son were rushed to the New STNM Hospital in Gangtok shortly after the incident.

“The woman was in a critical condition when she was taken to the hospital last night, but she is stable now. The boy is also doing fine,” said Tenzing Loden Lepcha, the superintendent of police of Gangtok.

SP Lepcha said that Gurung, who was believed to be inebriated, was arrested immediately after the incident on Tuesday night.

He has been charged under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC. Produced in a Gangtok court on Wednesday, he was remanded to seven-day police custody.
