Forensic experts on Thursday reached Jaigaon on the India-Bhutan border in Alipurduar to collect samples from the spot where the semi-charred body of the seven-year-old girl was recovered on Tuesday.
The girl, who went missing a week before her body was found, was allegedly raped and murdered by three persons who tried to burn her body to hide evidence.
On Tuesday, police nabbed Bablu Mian, the principal accused, from near the India-Nepal border, along with aides Jaynul Islam and Manir Hossain. On Wednesday, the trio were produced in a court in Alipurduar and sent in police custody for seven days.
While the forensic team, accompanied by cops, collected samples from the spot, a delegation of three doctors, Pabitra Goswami, Proloy Bose and Partha Sarathi Sarkar, met the girl's family members around noon.
“The victim's mother told us that they don’t have money even for the last rites. She demanded capital punishment for the accused,” said Goswami, a doctor with the Diamond Harbour hospital.
Women also took out a rally, seeking justice for the child. Later in the evening, around 1,000 people held a protest march with “We Want Justice” slogans.
The police on Wednesday stopped a BJP team from visiting the girl's house, prompting Raju Bista, the BJP MP of Darjeeling, to write to Union minister of women and child development Annapurna Devi. “We were stopped for no reason. This act leads us to suspect that the police are trying to hush up the case. That is why, I wrote to the Union minister, requesting her intervention to ensure an impartial probe and strictest punishment of the accused,” said Bista.
Cops denied it and said specific charges had been brought against the accused trio.
