A footbridge is coming up over Bagjola Canal primarily to help people visiting Biswa Bangla Convention Centre park their cars and get to the venue easily.

“We are trying to complete the work in time for the Bengal Global Business Summit, scheduled to take place on February 7 and 8,” said Debashis Sen, chairman cum managing director of Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco), that is building the bridge.

Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, inaugurated in October 2017, is one of the largest in the country. Its main auditorium can seat 3,200. Besides that there are smaller auditoriums, banquet halls and a hotel is coming up too. The venue had hosted Bengal Global Business Summit for the first time in 2018.

The centre is adjacent to the Bagjola Canal and on its other side is the sprawling parking space for over 3,000 cars. “At last year’s summit we had arranged for small buses to ferry visitors from the parking lot to the venue. Once the footbridge is ready they will be able to walk across themselves,” said Sen.

Work on the pedestrian crossover had begun after last year’s summit.
