Flights were disrupted at the Bagdogra airport on Wednesday because of torrential rain that had been battering Siliguri and the surrounding areas since Tuesday night.
While three flights had to be cancelled, another three were delayed, airport sources said.
“The flights were cancelled because of low visibility caused by heavy rain and winds. Two flights from Bangalore and Calcutta were cancelled, while a flight to Delhi could not leave because of rain,” said a source.
Three other flights, which were supposed to reach Bagdogra from Delhi, were delayed.
Altogether 66 flights — 33 arrivals and 33 departures — were scheduled to operate at the airport on Wednesday.
Hundreds of passengers were inconvenienced because of the disruption in the flight services.
Weather officials said the monsoon was active in the region and alerts were issued in sub-Himalayan north Bengal and Sikkim because there is a forecast of around 200mm of rain over the next few days at some locations.
Trains cancelled
The Northeast Frontier Railway said on Wednesday two long-distance trains had been cancelled because of heavy rain in some north Indian states, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Haryana.
The cancelled trains include the Dibrugarh Chandigarh Express on July 14 and the Guwahati-Udaipur Summer Special on July 16.
