A five-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by a 15-year-old boy in North Dinajpur district late on Saturday evening.

Police have taken the boy into custody. Investigations are on.

Sources said the girl stays with her mother while her father is a migrant worker in another state.

On Saturday, the boy, who is her neighbour, offered her chocolates, took her to the roof of his house and sexually assaulted her.

The child came home and revealed the ordeal to her mother. Her mother rushed her to hospital where she is still under treatment.

Some angry neighbours nabbed the boy and tied him to a tree. The police were informed. The police detained the boy.

The girl’s mother filed a complaint with the police, said sources.

Feared drowned

Alima Khatun, 50, of Majar-Sharif in Sonakhali area of Dhupguri block in Jalpaiguri, went missing in a river on Sunday.

She had herded her cattle to the other side of the Dudua river for grazing in the morning. While returning with her cattle in the afternoon, she suddenly slipped into the river. Police were informed. So far she has not been traced.

Body found

The unidentified body of a middle-aged man was found in a pond in Krishnapally, Malda ward 3, on Sunday. Some residents spotted the body under the water hyacinths of the pond and informed the police, who sent it for an autopsy.
