Five Trinamul Congress activists were arrested in Bhangar by Leather Complex police on Sunday morning for their alleged involvement in clashes with ISF supporters on January 21.

The arrested activists, including a booth committee president, were produced in the additional chief judicial magistrate’s court in Baruipur.

They have been remanded in police custody for 10 days.

The police have so far arrested 51 ISF activists, while a search is on for several other suspects.

The ISF had earlier accused the police of playing a partisan role for not arresting ruling party activists who they said were involved in violent clashes with ISF supporters.

Sources said the police arrested Trinamul activists after scanning CCTV footage.

The ISF leadership, however, termed the arrest as “eyewash”, aimed at avoiding controversy.

“We wanted the police to arrest Trinamul leader Arabul Islam and his supporters who beat up our party men and unleashed terror on January 20. But the police spared Arabul and his men following an order from the state government. But people know who the real culprits are and they will give a befitting reply to the ruling party soon,” an ISF leader in Bhangar said.

On January 20 and 21, Trinamul and ISF activists fought pitched battles in several pockets of Bhangar.

Supporters of both parties allegedly opened fire, hurled bombs and vandalised and torched party offices.

Trinamul leader Hakimul Islam said: “The police have done their job. We don’t interfere in the functioning of the police. People in Bhangar have seen who torched Trinamul party offices. Residents of Bhangar want peace and they will definitely teach them a lesson.”
