Finger at BJP after Trinamul Congress worker stabbed in Cooch Behar, one held

'There is a pond in the area and two factions of Trinamul are trying to gain control over it to make earnings by selling fish. This inner tussle has led to the incident. We have no connection with it,' said a district BJP leader

A Trinamul Congress supporter was stabbed by a person who was accused of stealing fish from ponds in Cooch Behar on Tuesday.

Sources said Narayan Modak, a resident of Khuttimari which is under the jurisdiction of Sahebganj police station, was attacked allegedly by Sushanta Das.

“A section of residents approached Modak and requested him to talk to Sushanta Das and ask him to refrain from stealing fish," said a resident.

As Modak went to Das’ house, the latter stabbed him.

Modak, who suffered serious injuries, is under treatment at MJN Medical College and Hospital. Das has been arrested.

After the incident, north Bengal development minister Udayan Guha accused the BJP of orchestrating the attack.

“Over the past few days, some people have been trying to foment tension in the area. They are behind the attack that was made on our supporter without any provocation,” said Guha.

BJP leaders, however, have rubbished the charge.

“There is a pond in the area and two factions of Trinamul are trying to gain control over it to make earnings by selling fish. This inner tussle has led to the incident. We have no connection with it,” said a district BJP leader.
