The Border Security Force (BSF) posted at the India-Bangladesh border in Cooch Behar on Sunday apprehended two Bangladeshi residents, including a minor, on charges of illegally infiltrating into India.

BSF sources said Md Gillu, a resident of Lalpur village in Rajshahi district of Bangladesh, and his minor son were nabbed when they were planning to head towards Siliguri.

Santosh Das, a resident of Bhaktinagar area of Jalpaiguri district, was also intercepted with them. “Das is a tout who was facilitating the duo’s journey. The Bangladeshi nationals had plans to go to Jaipur in Rajasthan. Later, all of them were handed over to the police at Kuchlibari police station,” said a source.

Also, the BSF carried out anti-smuggling drives on Sunday and Monday at different areas under the north Bengal frontier and seized various contraband items including cattle, narcotic and cough syrup bottles. The cost of the seized items is around Rs 5.33 lakh, said sources.

In another incident, the special operation group of the Siliguri Metropolitan Police along with a team of Ashighar police, arrested three suspected smugglers with brown sugar estimated at Rs 1.60 crore in Siliguri on Sunday.

Gadai Biswas, Rabi Biswakarma and Bijay Roy were nabbed from Baneswar More in Siliguri. They hail from Jyotinagar and Haiderpara areas of Siliguri.

“Around 800 grams of brown sugar, a derivative of heroin, was seized from the trio —suspected to be associated with a drug smuggling racket. The cost of the seized narcotic is around Rs 1.60 crore,” said a police officer.
