Among the accused, include a panchayat member of Trinamul and some other workers of the state’s ruling party.

Sources said Debnarayan Jadav (55), the victim, was having a tiff for the last one-and-half months with his nephew Digen, Shyambihari and few others.

Pramila, the deceased’ wife, said yesterday, at around 8.30pm, Digen, along with some others, barged into their house and started threatening her husband with dire consequences if he did not withdraw his claim of ownership of the concerned plot.

“During a heated exchange of words, Digen turned violent and attacked my father with a sharp weapon. They hacked him mercilessly. My brother Jitendra begged for our father's life but they kept on hacking him,” said Sulmi, Debnarayan’s daughter.

The accused and his associates even prevented them from taking their father to the hospital, she alleged.

“After they left, we took our father to Ratua rural hospital and later to Malda Medical College & Hospital where the doctors pronounced him dead,” the farmer’s daughter said.

On Friday morning, a police team reached the village. They spoke with the victim’s family and also conducted raids. Three persons have been detained in connection with the murder, said sources.

“We are waiting for the post-mortem report,” said a police officer.
