Police recovered four bodies from a family home in Durgapur’s Milanpally on Sunday morning.

The hanging bodies were of Amit Mondal, 35, a real estate developer, his wife Rupa, 31, their son Nimit, 6, and daughter Nikita, 1, police said.

The police also recovered a purported suicide note from the WhatsApp log of Amit’s cellphone.

The police said the note was sent by Amit to a WhatsApp family group early on Sunday.

The investigators added that in the purported note, Amit accused some of his cousins and family members of having links to the primary school job scam that is currently being probed by the CBI.

However, local residents and Amit’s in-laws claimed that the family was murdered in connection to an ongoing family feud over property.

The police started an unnatural death case and sent the bodies for postmortem.

Later in the day, the police detained Amit’s mother Bularani Mondal and cousin Gautam Naik based on an FIR by Amit’s father-in-law Biswambhar Pal.

Pal lodged an FIR against Bularani and 20 others — who stay in and around Durgapur — and accused them of murdering Amit and his family.

Sources said Amit’s hands were found tied and the CCTV cameras installed at his house were found covered by black polythene sheets.

Residents initially prevented the police from removing the bodies, alleging that Amit and his family were murdered.

Amit’s sister-in-law, Sudipta Ghosh, alleged that Amit’s mother Bularani Mondal and another cousin Sushanta Naik murdered them over a feud on the division of properties.

She claimed that Amit recently came to know that several members of his uncle’s family secured jobs in 2012 without legitimately clearing the TET.

“He (Amit) told me that several members of his maternal uncle’s family got jobs in primary schools illegally. He also wrote to me about this matter in my WhatsApp,” Sudipta told reporters on Sunday.

Sudipta said that with the WhatsApp message sent to the family group, Amit had attracted the attention of the CBI, police and Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay.

She corroborated police findings that Amit’s hands were tied behind his back and the CCTV of the house was covered with black polythene.

She alleged that on Saturday night, Amit’s mother Bularani was in the house.

The police said they were exploring all angles and had also sought help from forensic experts.
