A family of five was allegedly beaten up by a group of men for protesting and asking the men not to drink in front of their house in Rajarhat early on Monday.

Kushal Chakraborty who stays with his family in Rajarhat’s Bhaturia, around 7.5km away from the Chinar Park intersection, said a group of men would regularly drink in the open while playing loud music on portable music systems just outside their home.

The family lodged a complaint at the Rajarhat police station on Monday morning but said the cops were initially reluctant to take their complaint.

According to Kushal, a group regularly seen at rallies organised by the Trinamool Congress thrashed him, his mother, wife and other family members when he asked them not to drink outside their house because they could not sleep.

“I had stepped out of my house and told them not to play such loud music and drink right in front of my house as I have a young child at home. Instead of listening to me, they started abusing me and punching me. When my mother and wife tried to rescue me, they also hit them,” said Kushal.

The cops are yet to make any arrests in the case.

Kushal’s mother Papiya, 58, said she fell as she was pushed by the men when she tried to rescue her son.

“They then started raining blows on my head and I have suffered several gashes. My son and I needed stitches,” Papiya said.

A senior officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said they have started an investigation and several men have been detained for questioning.

Kushal told Metro that the men who beat them up were led by Hirak Mukhopadhyay, who is known in the locality as the brother of Rajarhat-Bishnupur II gram panchayat member Champa Lodh.

Champa’s husband Kalyan, however, said: “We have nothing to do with this.”

Rajarhat-New Town MLA Tapas Chakraborty said on Monday that he had asked the police to take stern action against anyone who could be involved in this.
