Police arrested an allegedly fake MBBS doctor from Luxbagan area of South 24-Parganas, who posed as a gynaecologist while visiting patients and collecting money
The accused, identified as Somnath Bhattacharya, is a resident of the Balarampota area of Uluberia in Howrah.
Police said he had been staying in Aranpur village of Gosaba posing as a specialist doctor. The arrest was made on the basis of a complaint lodged by Abhijit Mistry, a resident of Satjelia, at the Sunderbans coastal police station.
“When he prescribed medicines for one of my relatives, it raised doubts in my mind I checked his registration number. It turned out to be fake,” the complainant said.
Local sources said the doctor had failed to satisfy the villagers when they questioned him on his MBBS degree and his registration number.
Police found that the MBBS and MS degrees, which he used on his prescriptions, were ‘fake”. “He failed to produce any authentic document to support his degrees. We arrested him for cheating people and prescribing them wrong medicines. He will be produced before a court on Monday,” a cop said.
SDPO Canning Dibakar Das said, “A case has been started against the accused person for false personation, cheating, forgery, and for criminal breach of trust”.
