Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday lashed out at the BJP over its “fact-finding committee” report on the Bogtui carnage as she called it an interference in the ongoing CBI probe before underscoring that such a move would hamper a fair investigation.

“My observation is when the investigation is going on, these reports would interfere with the process of investigation and make the investigation weak. These reports will be politically used… I condemn this kind of attitude,” the chief minister said at Chowrasta in Darjeeling.

She also asked how a committee comprising political leaders could name alleged conspirators in the case when the CBI probe was yet to be completed. “How can they name our party president in Birbhum (Anubrata Mondal) in the report and demand his arrest? They want to arrest him only because he belongs to an Opposition party,” she said.

After the Bogtui carnage, the saffron camp formed a five-member “fact-finding” team comprising four former IPS officers and state party chief Sukanta Majumdar.

The team members visited Bogtui near Rampurhat in Birbhum district on March 24. Nine persons were killed at Bogtui following the murder of deputy chief of Barshal panchayat, Bhadu Sheikh, who was from the Trinamul Congress, on March 21.

In the report that was submitted to BJP national president J.P. Nadda on Wednesday, the team has mentioned that the “mafia,” in connivance with “police and political leadership,” is currently ruling Bengal. It mentioned Mondal’s alleged role in the incident, said BJP sources.

The report said the law and order machinery had “totally collapsed” and the law-abiding citizens of the state “have lost faith in the Government.”

Mamata, who intensified her diatribe against the BJP in the past few days, spoke about the BJP’s “fact-finding” report at a hurriedly-organised news conference at Chowrasta.

She alleged the entire exercise was a political one and it would only weaken the investigation being conducted by the CBI. The chief minister repeatedly underscored that the state was fully cooperating with the central agency.

“According to our information, the person who was arrested yesterday was nabbed by state police. He is Bhadu Sheikh’s murderer. We are fully helping,” said Mamata.

The chief minister said the probe must be “free and fair” and the interference by a political party (the BJP) was a “complete misuse of power, abuse of power” which would mislead and distort the investigation.

“People would lose their confidence in the investigation. I condemn the attitude of the BJP and the central government,” she said.

Asked about the mention of Anubrata Mondal’s name in the report, state BJP chief Majumdar said the Bogtui victims had publicly accused him of being behind the incident.

“The victims have accused Anubrata Mondal in public. His name has also come up in our investigation,” he said.
