The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned Saayoni Ghosh, a Bengali film and TV actress and the president of Trinamul Youth Congress, for questioning in connection with its ongoing probe into the irregularities in recruitment at state-aided schools.

Saayoni has been asked to appear before a team of ED officers at the agency's Calcutta office on Friday with details of her income tax returns for the last 10 years and her bank account statements.

Senior ED officers said they wanted to clarify a few things that have surfaced during the scrutiny of a series of financial transactions of Kuntal Ghosh, the arrested Trinamul Youth Congress leader.

Kuntal was expelled from the party following his arrest in January.

The ED arrested him for his alleged role in "irregularities" in recruitment in state-aided schools.

"Our role is confined to tracing the money trail in the case relating to the alleged illegal appointments. We have a few questions for her (Saayoni) and hopefully she will clarify those," said a senior ED officer.

Investigating officers from the central agency said they were trying to find out where the money, which was allegedly collected from prospective candidates against the promise of a job, had been parked.

Saayoni, who unsuccessfully contested the 2021 Assembly polls for Trinamul from Asansol South against the BJP's Agnimitra Paul, has not denied knowing Kuntal after several pictures of both sharing space had surfaced.

"I'll never say that I don't know Kuntal," Saayoni had said replying to media queries. "He was with the Trinamul Youth Congress."

A month after Kuntal's arrest, the Tollywood actress-turned-politician sent a legal notice to BJP MP Saumitra Khan for saying she has had an “illicit relationship with Kuntal Ghosh”.

Senior ED officers said they would ask Saayoni about Kuntal before moving on to seek clarifications on some of the money-related issues.

Abhishek Banerjee, Trinamul's Diamond Harbour MP and national general secretary, had also been called by the ED earlier on June 13 for questioning as a part of the investigations into the alleged school recruitment scam, but he wrote to the agency that he would appear before the investigators after the July 8 panchayat elections.
