Arrested Trinamul leader Anubrata Mondal’s daughter Sukanya was questioned by an Enforcement
Directorate (ED) team at its Delhi headquarters on Wednesday.
The central agency had summoned Sukanya in connection with its probe into the alleged multi-crore cattle smuggling case spanning Bengal and a few other states.
Sukanya, a primary school teacher in Bolpur, reached the ED office around 10.30am. The interrogation continued till evening, sources said.
Sources in the ED, probing the money trail in the cattle case involving shell companies, said Sukanya was questioned on the two where her name is among the directors. The ED sought details on the two companies — ANM Agrochem and Neer Developers.
In its recent chargesheet in the case, the CBI said Sukanya’s annual income had increased from Rs 3.10 lakh in the 2013-14 financial year to Rs 1.45 crore in 2020-21.
“It is vital to understand the source of her money and assets. We will question her again after going through her statements and cross-checking them with data that is with us,” said a senior ED officer.
Senior ED officers said a chain of shell entities was used to divert funds allegedly collected as kickbacks from cattle smuggling using the Birbhum-corridor and transferred to accounts of entities who were a part of the chain, the ED officers said.
It wasn't clear whether ED officials questioned Sukanya in presence of Saigal Hossain, her father’s bodyguard, now in the custody of the agency in Delhi, in the same case. Officials said Hossain had allegedly played a key role in parking huge amounts from the illegal trade of cattle on behalf of his boss, Anubrata Mondal.
