Dharmendra Sharma and Nitesh Vyas, two senior deputy election commissioners, held a meeting with all Bengal district magistrates at a hotel here on Monday and gave them several instructions related to electoral roll revision which will commence across the country on November 1.

The session is considered to be the first preparatory meeting ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

“The electoral roll revision is a regular feature that takes place every year. But this year’s electoral roll revision is very crucial because based on this year’s electoral roll, Lok Sabha polls will be held. The work for the electoral roll will start in November and the final list will be published on January 5,” said a source.

According to a DM present at the meeting, the senior deputy election commissioners laid stress on an error-free electoral roll.

“The new voters will be encouraged to get their names registered on the new voter list. But at the same time, we have to be careful before the inclusion of new names in the list in terms of preparing an error-free voter list. At the same time, we should ensure that there are no bogus voters on the list to hold a free and fair election,” said the DM.

The deputy commissioners, sources said, also laid stress on inspecting the booths within a few weeks and take note of the present condition. “If the booths need to get repaired, they should be done at the earliest. All other facilities like water connections, and electricity connections have to be completed without any delay,” said a source.
