An elderly woman died and her daughter got injured in an elephant attack in Jalpaiguri district on Sunday morning.

Sources said Mongra Oraon, 60, a resident of Mogulkata tea estate in the Banarhat block, went to Moraghat forest on the fringes of the garden for nature’s call. A wild elephant standing nearby attacked her. As she raised an alert, her daughter ran for help.

The elephant trampled the woman and gave her daughter a chase. She ran and fell into a drain in the plantation of the garden and got injured.

As the news spread, foresters from the Binnaguri wildlife squad and a Banarhat police team reached the spot to recover the body.

Later, foresters said that the elephant didn’t venture out of the forest but the victim entered it.

“It is an unfortunate incident. We have sent a report to senior officers. They will decide if the victim’s family will get compensation,” said a forester.

Under norms, compensation is paid in case a person dies from a wild animal attack in a human habitat. In case a person enters a reserve forest area, which is a wildlife habitat, and dies, compensation is not paid.
