DYFI leader Minakshi Mukherjee was released from judicial custody on Tuesday, a day after a Howrah court granted her bail, along with 16 others, in a case related to a clash with the police on February 26 in Howrah’s Panchla during a rally in protest of the alleged murder of student activist Anis Khan.

“We have a one-point agenda. Anis’s murderers must be booked. Till that happens, our movement will continue,” Minakshi said after her release from the Alipore Women’s Correctional Home. Sixteen others were released from the Howrah Correctional Home.

As Minakshi walked out of judicial custody and reached Rashbehari Crossing in Calcutta to be greeted by SFI-DYFI workers, police reportedly cracked down on the gathering and arrested 55 student-and-youth activists around 1pm. The arrested activists, including SFI leaders Mayukh Biswas and Srijan Bhattacharyya, were taken to Lalbazar from where they were released later in the evening.

On release, Bhattacharyya accused the police of “brutal behaviour” and announced they would renew their protest demanding justice for “slain student leader Anis Khan” from Wednesday.

“Chief minister Mamata Banerjee had set a deadline of 15 days to the SIT to finish its probe into Anis’s murder. That deadline is over. We will now hit the streets again,” Bhattacharyya said and announced a rally from College Street to Moulali on Wednesday evening.

He said the police brutally attacked student activists, some of whom were having tea at a roadside tea stall.

“Student activist Didhiti Bose was having tea at a roadside stall when police lathicharged her, breaking her leg," said an SFI leader.

Police refuted the charge. A police officer said as the Madhyamik exam was on and there was a curb on gatherings, the activists were rounded up for violating the restrictions.
