An intoxicated youth misbehaved with two women junior doctors at the Raiganj Government Medical College & Hospital (RGMCH) on Monday while they were standing outside the college canteen.
They informed the police and a team rushed to the spot from Raiganj police station. Jiban Rajbanshi, the youth, has been arrested.
Sources said like other government medical colleges across Bengal, students and junior doctors of RGMCH were also demonstrating at the college campus today in protest of the brutal killing of a woman doctor at R G Kar Medical College & Hospital.
During the demonstration, two women junior doctors thought of having their lunch and walked up to the canteen at the campus.
“The canteen was crowded and we were waiting outside. At that time, the youth suddenly approached us. He was drunk and started misbehaving with us. He also abused us in filthy language. We were feeling insecure,” said one of the doctors.
As the duo started walking away, Rajbanshi allegedly gave them a chase. Some locals watched the act and intercepted him.
Haridas Mondal, an e-rickshaw driver, said he was dropping passengers at the spot.
“I heard the person, who appeared to be drunk, threatening two women. After some time, police came and took him away. Surprisingly, he resorted to such an act right inside the medical college campus,” said Mondal.
Officials at Raiganj police station said Rajbanshi has been arrested.
“There is no security for us at the medical college. Or else, how can a person intimidate two women junior doctors in broad daylight,” said a junior doctor who joined the protests.
