Sources said that on afternoon, Tapan Dey, 54, and Mintu Sarkar aka Bapi, 46, were found dead at Dey’s house in ward 13 of Raiganj town.

Both the victims were contractual employees in the state PHE department.

Dey used to stay with his daughter and his wife stays in Calcutta. On Saturday, he was alone when Bapi, along with Ratan Sarkar, one of their mutual acquaintances, went to his house.

After some time, some neighbours saw Ratan walking out of the house hurriedly.

Soon, a team from Raiganj police station rushed to the spot.

According to police sources, Tumpa, Ratan’s wife, said both Dey and Bapi were known to her husband.

“This afternoon, my husband got excited while talking on the phone with some person. He yelled that he would murder Tapan Dey and got out. I tried to stop him but he rode out on his bike. After some time, he returned home. I spotted blood marks on his shirt and his hands. I immediately informed my brother, who in turn, informed the police,” said Tumpa.

As the police reached Ratan’s place, they found him cleaning his blood-soaked shirt. They detained him immediately.

Soon after, the police entered Dey’s house and found him and Bapi dead.

There were multiple injury marks on their bodies.

The police recovered the bodies and sent them for post-mortem at the Raiganj Government Medical College and Hospital.

“We suspect they were hacked to death. We are waiting for their post-mortem reports to know the exact cause of their deaths,” said a police officer.

During preliminary investigation, the police came to know both the victims and Ratan were drug abusers.

“They used to consume brown sugar (a derivative of heroin). It seems they had an altercation over money which led to the deaths. We suspect the victims were dazed and thus could not resist the attack and died,” the officer added.

A source said that the police also recovered some narcotics from the spot.

Police officers are interrogating Ratan for more information. They are also inspecting the site of the murder to collect evidence, the source said.
