The business fraternity in Howrah’s Domjur organised a rally on Thursday to urge the administration to address their helplessness following the daylight heist at a jewellery store on Tuesday.

Four armed youths took away around 5kg of gold jewellery from MS Gems and Jewellers Sons, which is a stone’s throw from Domjur police station.

Over 50 members of the Domjur Byabsayee Kalyan Samity walked down the Howrah-Amta Road on Thursday afternoon demanding an alarm system that would connect each store with the police station, more CCTV cameras and adequate lighting.

The police have yet to make an arrest in the heist case.

They have seized two motorbikes that are suspected to have been used by the gang that raided MS Gems and Jewellers Sons. The bikes were found in Janai, Hooghly, about 17km from Domjur.

One was registered in Siliguri and the other in Baruipur, the police said.

“We seized the two-wheelers in Janai on Thursday afternoon,” said an officer of the Howrah Police Commissionerate.

“The gang has been identified. It’s an inter-state gang. We have set up a special investigation team to probe the case.”

A salesperson at the Domjur store had told the police that she saw two robbers arrive on a two-wheeler. Two others joined them later, she said.

CCTV footage shows four men leaving the store on two bikes.

The police efforts so far have fallen short of instilling enough confidence among businessmen in Domjur. The audacity of the robbers to leave the shutter of the shop rolled up and the glass gate open during the operation has left the traders shaken.

“We want alarm systems installed so the nearest police station gets the signal when the button is pressed,” said a member of the Domjur Byabsayee Kalyan Samity.

“More lights should be installed and the CCTV coverage of the stretch of the market should be stepped up”.

The heist at the Domjur jewellery shop was the second in three days. On Sunday, a jewellery shop in Raniganj in West Burdwan had been looted.

The Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate has arrested two persons in connection with the Raniganj robbery. Officers in the Howrah commissionerate have been in touch with them to know whether some members of the gang had been involved in the Domjur robbery as well.
