Hundreds of neighbours and relatives of a Class XI girl ransacked the home and clinic of a physician in Asansol town on Sunday, accusing him of “incorrect treatment” after the teenager died on Saturday night.

The furious crowd placed the body of Shukla Mandal, 17, in front of Dr Dwijen Bhuin’s home on Sunday morning as part of their demonstrations.

Later, they also ransacked the home and adjoining clinic at Lalganj under Asansol north police station limits, and claimed that the girl died owing to “incorrect treatment” by the doctor.

Sources said that the girl, who was complaining of fever, was brought by her mother Rinku Mondal to the doctor on January 29.

The mother alleged that Shukla’s condition deteriorated after the doctor gave certain medicines and an injection allegedly without examining the teenager properly.

“Since then, Shukla Mandal’s health started deteriorating. She started foaming at the mouth and her temperature shot up,” said a family member.

Shukla was rushed to the Asansol district hospital from where she was shifted to a private hospital in Durgapur town after her condition took a turn for the worse.

Shukla died in the private hospital on Saturday evening.

Her mother Rinku buttressed her allegations of wrong treatment by citing a doctor from Asansol district hospital.

This doctor reportedly told her that Shukla had received the wrong treatment.

Accused physician Dwijen Bhuin refused to speak to the media on Sunday.

His son Chandan Bhuin claimed that the girl had been brought to his father for treatment almost two weeks ago but she died only on Saturday.

“The allegations of wrong treatment against my father are baseless. The girl died yesterday (Saturday) but she had been brought to my father for treatment almost two weeks ago. In between, she was treated by many doctors in other places. But now the blame is being put on my father after her death,” said Chandan.

A large contingent of police rushed to the spot of the demonstration and dispersed the crowd after talks on Sunday.

West Burdwan District chief medical officer of health, Yunus Khan, said: “I have heard about the incident. If I receive any complaint in this matter, it will be investigated.”
