A low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has shut Digha’s beaches for tourists and fishermen for two days since Friday night.

Officials at the Digha Development Authority said weather officials had told them about possible tidal waves and heavy rain.

On Saturday, officials made public announcements warning tourists and fishermen that the waters were out of bonds. “We have information about larger-than-usual waves. A youth from Calcutta was pulled into the sea this morning but was rescued. We have also instructed hotel owners to keep an eye on their guests,” said Basuki Banerjee, officer-in-charge of Digha police station.

Digha faced a similar, if more severe, situation in May this year when tourists had to be evacuated because of Cyclone Fani.

“We regret the inconvenience to tourists here but this is a risk we cannot afford,” said authority vice-chairman Akhil Giri. East Midnapore DM Partha Ghosh said they were doing their best to ensure that fishermen and tourists stayed away from the waters.
