Mamata Banerjee on Monday sent a clear message to her party MLAs that she would be the "sole authority" in Trinamul to take the ultimate decisions.

A source said that during the half-an-hour meeting at the Syed Nausher Ali Hall in the Assembly, Mamata discussed a range of topics that were sufficient to reassert her sole authority on the party.

"If she asserted her sole control over MPs and senior ministers in the recent (Trinamul) national executive committee meeting, on Monday she made it clear to party MLAs that no one other than her would make any decision either within the party or in the government," said an MLA present at the meeting.

At the November 25 national executive committee meeting, held at her Kalighat residence, Mamata formed committees comprising the party's old guards and her close aides, the move assuming significance amid reports of growing differences between her and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee.

According to another MLA, no one could recall when Mamata last held such a meeting with all party MLAs in the Assembly to send out such a bold and clear message.

"Trinamool state president Subrata Bakshi met us earlier to deliver political messages, but I can’t recall when Didi headed such a meeting in recent memory," he added.

Abhishek's aides

During the meeting, Mamata said she had observed the party's youth and student wings were not functioning properly and she would reshuffle both.

A source pointed out that the presidents of the party’s youth and student wings, Saayoni Ghosh and Trinankur Bhattacharya, were Abhishek's close aides.

"This indicates Didi will replace the duo. Despite Didi saying that she would reshuffle the party’s organisation in district levels, mentioning these two specific units was significant," said an MLA who attended the meeting.

Followers of Abhishek were left uncertain whether Mamata, as the party supremo, would endorse the reshuffle proposal put forth by her nephew.

"She made it clear that she would take the final call on reshuffling the party's organisation, which suggests that she would not accept anyone else’s proposal. Let’s see what happens now," said a Trinamool leader known to be close to Abhishek.

Abhishek, on Saturday, clarified he had done his duty by submitting a proposal for the removal of leaders based on their performance in the Lok Sabha polls. "Now the party will decide whether to implement it or not," Abhishek told reporters on Saturday.

WhatsApp group

Mamata has asked to form a new WhatsApp group for the party MLAs and has assigned minister Aroop Biswas to post her messages, which she would send him privately.

"It is the first time a social media group will be formed to send Didi's messages directly to us. Earlier, either Abhishek Banerjee's office or Subrata Bakshi’s office used to send political instructions," said a minister.

Mamata stated that the party would issue a showcause notice to an MLA who failed to attend the Assembly for three consecutive days. She urged MLAs to begin preparing for the 2026 Assembly polls and regularly meet people in their constituencies.

"She instructed MLAs to ask pertinent questions inside the House and not embarrass the party with misleading questions. She warned ministers to be cautious when answering questions inside the House," said a source.

Narayan Goswami, the Ashoknagar MLA and chief of the North 24-Parganas Zilla Parishad, was rebuked by Mamata for intervening in political activities beyond his jurisdiction.

6 MLAs take oath

Six TMC MLAs elected in the recent bypolls were given the oath of office in the Assembly by governor C.V. Ananda Bose on Monday. Mamata asked new MLAs to personally thank voters, a source said.
