Two DYFI leaders in Cooch Behar have alleged that they were attacked and assaulted by the son of a Trinamul MLA and his associates on Monday night.

DYFI's Subhralok Das and Yusuf Ali, who suffered injuries, have filed a complaint at Sitai police station.

Das said that from November 3, the DYFI, which is the youth wing of the CPM, will launch Insaf Yatra, a statewide march, from Cooch Behar. On Monday, they held a street corner event in Sitai More ahead of the Yatra. They were returning to Dinhata on a motorcycle when they were stopped by the Sitai MLA's son, they alleged.

“Suddenly, Kuntal Barma Basunia (the son of Jagadish Barma Basunia, the Trinamul MLA of Sitai) and his associates stopped us near a petrol pump. They were carrying firearms and sticks. Without any provocation, they started beating us. Yusuf was mercilessly beaten up and he collapsed on the spot. I somehow arranged an ambulance and took him to the hospital,” said Das, a district secretariat member of DYFI in Cooch Behar.

Later, a complaint was registered with the police.

Das, a Dinhata resident, said the police should take steps against the attackers.

“How can an MLA’s son resort to such an attack? The police should arrest him and his henchmen or else we will launch a movement in the district,” he said.

Calls made to the MLA and his son by this newspaper went unanswered.

District Trinamul leaders said they had faith in the police.

“The police are probing the case and we believe they will unveil the truth. If the charge is correct, the law will take its course. However, the police should also find out if the charge was made to malign the MLA,” said Partha Pratim Roy, party spokesperson in Cooch Behar.

Hospital protest

Relatives of homemaker Tuli Khatun, 27, resorted to a demonstration at the Malda Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday evening, alleging she died of wrong treatment after delivering a boy.

Tuli bled profusely after childbirth, a relative said, adding they arranged four units of blood for transfusion, but she died "of wrong treatment”. The hospital has promised a probe if a complaint is formally lodged.
