Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday alleged efforts were on to malign Bengal’s law and order.
Mamata, who was speaking at an administrative review meeting in Malda district, alerted the state police of plans being made by “outsiders” to foment tension in Bengal.
“A group of 20 to 25 people had come to the state from Delhi. They came here to create tension among communities. It is a part of the plan to prove that the law and order is situation deteriorating in Bengal. No one here wants riots but a section of people are succumbing to monetary offers.... This has to stop,” she said.
Most recently in North Dinajpur district, violence sparked earlier this month after a 17-year-old girl in the district was found dead.
Angry residents raised questions were raised over the manner in which police had taken away her body for post-mortem. Mamata had reacted to it earlier. She referred to the issue again on Thursday.
“The police have been instructed to keep bags to carry bodies. It (the way they took the body) was improper. The police could have used at least white clothes to carry the body,” the chief minister said.
After the body was returned to her family, there was a fresh round of violence, as the family alleged she was raped and killed and the police claimed suicide by poison. On April 25, a protest rally turned violent. Kaliaganj police station was torched, cops were beaten up and homes near the police station ransacked.
“How dare some people attack the men in uniform? It is deplorable,” Mamata said.
On April 26 night, the police launched an extensive search to nab those involved in the violence. While a team was raiding Chandga, a village in Kaliaganj block, local youth Mrityunjoy Barman who protested against some arrests died of an alleged police bullet early on April 27.
Mamata also referred to the incident. “We have heard the village is controlled by the BSF.... There should be a probe to find out who fired at the youth. The BSF often resorts to highhandedness in bordering villages,” she said.
Following Mrityunjoy’s death, his family moved Calcutta High Court, seeking a CBI probe. The state assigned the probe to the CID. On Wednesday, Calcutta High Court ordered a magistrate-level inquiry into the death along with the CID probe. The court also asked the CID to submit a preliminary report by May 12.
Prohibitory orders
North Dinajpur district administration on Thursday extended prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC across Kaliaganj block for seven more days, till May 12.
