Deadline for trial against Maoists

The high court on Tuesday directed a Midnapore court to conclude in one month the trial against 26 Maoists who were arrested in connection with the killing of 24 jawans during an attack on an Eastern Frontier Rifles camp at Shilda in the Jangal Mahal in 2010.

Justice Joymalya Bagchi of Calcutta High Court issued the directive while granting bail to Indrajit Karmakar, an accused in the case.

A huge quantity of arms and ammunition had been looted during the ambush on the camp near Jhargram on February 15, 2010.

Following the attack, the joint action force conducted a massive raid on the Jangal Mahal and its surrounding areas. On July 26, 2012, the force arrested 26 Maoists, including Arnab Das, Indrajit Karmakar, Tara Hembram and Sanatan Soren.

The trial against the accused Maoists are going on at a court in Midnapore.

Das was granted bail by the Midnapore court on April 11 this year. Karmakar is the second accused in the case to get bail.
