For the first time, the students of Darjeeling Hill University (DHU) — established in 2021 — appeared for their semester exams in offline mode on Thursday.
Sujata Rani Rai, the acting registrar of the DHU, said around 64 post-graduation students had registered for third semester exams but 60 of them appeared in the exams in offline mode for the first time. “Earlier, these students had appeared in two other semester exams in online mode.”
As of now, the DHU runs from Mungpoo in Darjeeling district, around 45km from here. The varsity has been set up in Mungpoo in a local ITI building as construction of the permanent building is in progress. At the varsity, PG courses are offered in English, Nepali, History, political science and math.
On Thursday, Neeraj Tamang Zimba, the BJP MLA of Darjeeling, wrote to chief minister Mamata Banerjee, the governor and the state education minister seeking intervention to make the varsity functional in a full-fledged manner. “They should take initiatives to depute a vice-chancellor, registrar, controller of exams and other officials. Because of absence of officials, faculty members and infrastructure, admission has stopped at the DHU,” he said.
