Darjeeling district police have decided to issue coupons for vehicles visiting tourist hotspot Tiger Hill from one more spot.
According to police sources, it has been decided that every day, coupons would be issued for 50 more commercial vehicles from the traffic guard office at Jorebungalow on the outskirts of the hill town.
So far, coupons were issued only from Sadar traffic guard office in Darjeeling town.
“The initiative has been taken up experimentally. If coupons are provided from more than one place, tourists from different directions can reach Tiger Hill,” said Arindam Adhikari, the deputy superintendent (traffic) of Darjeeling district police.
Every day, coupons for 250 vehicles are issued for Tiger Hill from Sadar traffic guard.
“Under the new system, 50 more vehicles can reach Tiger Hill every day. Cars from Darjeeling, Siliguri and Sikkim will get priority. No coupons will be issued to private vehicles,” Adhikari added.
“Tourists from Kurseong and Dowhill will now be helped by this new system. Also, if a coupon is not available at the Sadar traffic guard office, drivers can try for a coupon at the Jorebungalow centre. There are plans to open more such coupon distribution centres in the coming days,” said a source.
Since 2019, the district police control traffic movement in Tiger Hill to check snarls and sound pollution.
Tiger Hill has been a favourite with tourists for its breathtaking sunrise.
